EAST DARTMOOR | DEVON
Amphitheatre

OVERALL WILD GRADE

BOOK
Step over the crumbling ancient drystone wall and enter the Amphitheatre. Soaring trees surround you & leave you a bit dizzy but you soon adjust & realise just how intimate & unique this space is. The ground is uneven, with debris & strewn granite rocks but there spaces to pitch a small tent or string a hammock & once camp is ready, you can switch off.
On warm days, the sun casts dancing shadows on the ground & you can head off around the woodland to explore, forage & observe nature. You are a walk away from Buckland Beacon, Rippon Tor & it's only a little further down into the Dart Valley for a wild swim & adventure!

Why we love it?
Easily accessible but immediately wild. We visited on a warm summers day & it really did blow us away.
There are extensive views across Dartmoor from the woodland edge, across pasture meadows. No doubt Dartmoor's famous Wild Ponies will be curious & there is a lot to explore in the immediate area.

Close to both parking & access, the Amphitheatre still offers a wild space to escape too. No running water within walking distance, so make sure you bring your own.
Be aware of roaming livestock & wildlife and also of fallen or falling branches when in the woodland area. Intermittent phone signal is available. Ground conditions are generally dry & semi-level, although there will be deadwood, strewn rocks & bare earth.

It's easy to access, not far from the car or a nearby road but once you step over the old drystone wall into this small copse, you are taken aback by the towering tress that surround you.
Peering through the tree trunks, there are extensive views across Dartmoor & over wildflower meadows. The Amphitheatre is an amazing opportunity to try out woodland camping, clearing a space for your tent, foraging for mushrooms in the autumn & observing the details in local habitats around you. Its not completely wild but it feels it.
